Data use conditions

We ask that users of data hosted on VectorMap adhere to the following: museum data records may be used by individual researchers or research groups, but they may not be repackaged, resold, or redistributed in any form without the express written consent of a curatorial staff member of the participating institution. If any of these records are used in an analysis, report, presentation, etc., the provenance of the original data must be acknowledged and the specific institutions' curatorial staff and VectorMap notified. The individual institutions, VectorMap, and their staff are not responsible for damages, injury or loss due to the use of these data.

Publications and presentations resulting from the use of VectorMap data should list the names of each institution whose data were used, and VectorMap ( as the portal by which the data were accessed or downloaded. The citation also should list the date that the data were accessed via VectorMap. Users should refer to individual institutional policies on proper citation of data from those providers if these are present.

Example: Data were obtained from records held in the following institutions and accessed through the VectorMap data portal ( on 15 February 2009: National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC; University of Queensland Insect Collection, Brisbane; Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, University of California, Berkeley, etc.
