Article: Summer 2016. Early Lessons From the Zika Virus Outbreak: Why We Need a Museum of Data

19 Mar 2015. Featured Projects Webpages: VM has recently added new webpages to highlight ongoing projects and data partners. These pages provide background information for each project/ data submission and some figures summarizing the data found in VM. If you are interested in having the VM Team create a webpage for your project or data submission contact us at mosquitomap@si.edu.

New Maps, Country-level Statistics and Information: VectorMap has added two new interactive maps to the homepage designed to display country-level information without the need to open the VM data portal. The first map, powered by StatPlanet is the VectorMap country viewer for mosquito species and human statistics. This map displays data on the number of mosquito records and species currently on VM for each country. This map also displays the number of mosquito species reported from each country based on the WRBU Systematic Catalog of the Culicidae and human population statistics. The second map, powered by ESRI Arc GIS Online displays links to guidance from the CDC, WHO and AFPMB as well as links to the WRBU mosquito identification keys and Vector Hazard Reports (if available).

A New global Ae. albopictus habitat suitability model has been added: These 2000-2009 maps were created using a vector distribution model driven by seven meteorological criteria following a multi-criteria decision analysis method and employing the ECHAM5/ MESSy2 atmospheric chemistry (EMAC) general circulation model (GCM).

Vector Hazard Report, Middle East: Traveling to the Middle East? Learn about the vector hazards you may encounter in the region such as the dominant vectors of Leishmaniasis, Phlebotomus papatasi, Phlebotomus sergenti and Phlebotomus alexandri or a vector of West Nile virus, Culex pipiens. Vector Hazard Reports can be created to feature specific countries or regions in any part of the world. If you would like to have a Vector Hazard Report created for an area of interest, send a request to mosquitomap@si.edu. Find all the current Vector Hazard Reports here.

Vector Hazard Reports! Users can now find packaged content in easily digestible PDF’s focusing on emerging vector threats around the world. All content is available through the VectorMap data portal but can now be highlighted and shared. Vector Hazard Reports can be created to feature specific countries or regions in any part of the world. If you would like to have a Vector Hazard Report created for an area of interest, send a request to mosquitomap@si.edu. Find all the current Vector Hazard Reports here.

U.S. Army Public Health Command Tick Test Kit Data Added. Nearly 14,000 tick collection records from the U.S. have been added to VectorMap which were provided by the Army Public Health Command’s Tick Test Kit Program. The records are compiled from military personnel and their families who have submitted ticks they have found to be identified and tested for pathogens like Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

Climate Anomaly Layer Update. A monthly updated climate anomaly map layer now displays consistent above and below average rainfall based on the previous three months (Data provided by NASA). Consistent above average rainfall can create more larval habitats but below average rainfall can mean more pooling of streams and rivers along with increased domestic water storage, both of which can also increase the available habitat for mosquito larva.

New Map Layers on VectorMap: • Updated Chikungunya country of occurrence layer care of the CDC, December, 2014 • VectorMap now contains updated Scrub typhus layers care of Dr’s Daryl Kelly and Al Richards (WRAIR/NMRC), November 2014. • Google Trends provides data on the volume of Google Searches for a defined term. This data can give an early warning to health planners as to when vectors may be impacting local populations. Check out the Google Trends data from the U.S. for “mosquito” and “tick” on VectorMap now.

VectorMap In The News: Below is a list of recent news articles written by the VectorMap team DoD Project Puts Bugs in the Crosshairs Beyond the Battlefield, David Pecor Read how the VectorMap team has been collaborating with 9 Federal Agencies in the D.C. Metro area to reduce the risk of tick-borne diseases.
